The Wednesday Recital Series consists of up to 30 concerts in the Everson Museum’s Hosmer Auditorium at 401 Harrison St., Syracuse, NY 13202. Its season runs from late September through the end of May, with a break from just before Thanksgiving to late January. All concerts are free of charge, begin at 12:30PM and are approximately 45 minutes long.
History ~ Formerly known as the Lunch Hour Series, The Wednesday Recital Series has always had its home at the Everson Museum, and began shortly after the museum opened. The mission of CMM is to spotlight local artists, therefore, concerts have always included local free-lance musicians, teachers, members of the Syracuse Symphony or Syracuse University faculty, and occasional students. Artist selection for each season’s series was done by either invitation or application. Always present was the potential for a completely outstanding program; an event that left the audience with the feeling of having received a valuable gift, but it has always been “informal”, with little established structure.
Present Day ~ Today, The Wednesday Recital Series is a well-planned balance of performances, selected by an application process beginning in late March or early April for the concert season beginning the following September. (An on-line application can be found during this period on the CMM website.) Although spotlighting local artists, the series also features out-of-town artists who are friends of the Central New York cultural community, including artists from New York City who make the trek to perform on the CMM stage. The Wednesday Recital Series offers an ever-widening array of music, instruments, and ensembles. CMM owns and maintains two outstanding Steinway concert pianos, a D and a B, available to artists on the series. The level of performance ranges from good to world-class. All series concerts are professionally recorded, with some selected to be featured on WCNY-FM.
A recent Wednesday Recital Series boasted piano recitals, vocal recitals, a virtuoso trombone recital, a virtuoso flute quartet, a bluegrass/folk acoustic duo, a 30-person chorale, a recital dedicated to folk music of diverse cultures, recitals by players from the Syracuse Symphony, and performances by the Syracuse University faculty. There have been several world premieres given on the Wednesday Recital Series. The repertoire is distinguished and interesting, and emphasizes the term “classic”.
The Wednesday Recital Series is CMM’s largest showcase. Its concerts remain free of charge, with a request to audience members that they give a free-will donation to help keep the great things happening, and the great music flowing. Look for an application to the Wednesday Recital Series on this website during March, April, and May, and see the section on "Instruments” at the tab "About CMM" for a description of our fine pianos. Consult our master calendar for a listing of the individual concerts, and finally, be sure to call (315) 424-3984 if you have further questions. We welcome your calls.
