48th ANNUAL COMPETITION FOR SINGERS

The competition will be held live in cooperation with Onondaga Community College, Syracuse, NY

February 8, 2025

The competition has traditionally begun at 9:30 a.m. in the Performing Arts Building at Onondaga Community College. We are currently working out the exact schedule.

Apply by January 18, 2025.

Applicants will be contacted via email by February 1, 2025, to confirm their participation and be given further instructions.

The David Ross American Song Prize is given for the performance of an original song by an African-American composer. Click here for the list of eligible songs.
Ernst Bacon American Song Prize ($500)

The Bacon prize for best performance of an American song is awarded to those who have a Bacon song in their competition repertoire. Visit the Bacon Society web site ernstbacon.org, Spotify, or contact ellenwbacon@aol.com for ideas.
Gayle Ross Collaborative Pianist Award ($100 per category)

This competition is open to singers who are residents of, or studying in, NYS and those states contiguous with NYS.

COMPETITION REGULATIONS

  1. Contestants must perform within their age group as of February 8, 2025. Proof of age (copy of driver’s license or passport) must be presented at registration.
  2. Former First Place winners of the CMM Competition may not compete again in the same category.
  3. Repertoire requirements (all must be memorized): 1. An aria from an opera; 2. An aria from an oratorio, mass, requiem, or cantata in the original language; 3. One foreign language art song; 4. One 20th Century American art song composed between 1912-1984; 5. One 20th – 21st Century American art song composed between 1985-2025 (date of composition, not publication); no arrangements allowed. Announce title & composer. Contestants are known only by number to the judges. Visit songofamerica.net for American song ideas.
  4. The submitted repertoire may be changed via email but must meet the above requirements. Changes will not be accepted after January 25, 2025.
  5. Contestants chosen for the finals will sing a selection of their choice and one American art song. Judges will take into consideration the difficulty and sophistication of the American song, so consult your teacher/coach.
  6. CMM reserves the right not to award a prize in a category on recommendation of the judges.
  7. Contestants are encouraged to provide their own pianist. CMM will provide a pianist for a $40 fee. If requesting a pianist, you will be notified where to send digital copies of your music.
  8. Complete application online and submit payment of $30 via PayPal, plus $40 if requesting a pianist.
  9. Contestants will be notified of their audition times via email no later than February 1, 2025.

2025 COMPETITION JUDGES

Richard Koons

Richard Koons is a professional actor, singer and teacher and has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe in operas and musicals.

As an educator, Mr. Koons has been teaching privately in the NYC area for 20 years and his
students can be seen and heard performing all over the world. He has been a guest lecturer and performer at several Universities including Iowa State University, Manchester University, and Ball State University.

Performance highlights include but are not limited to national and international tours of Squelch in Love Never Dies, Maestro in Phantom of the Opera, Henry Etches in Titanic the Musical, and
Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol.

New York and regional credits include Kerry in Valentino, Jean ValJean in Les Miserables, Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, Kris Kringle
in Miracle on 34th Street, Edna in Hairspray, Old Deuteronomy in Cats, Rev. Mother in Nunsense A-Men, Archibald Craven in Secret Garden, Horton in Seussical the Musical, Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast, Enoch Snow in Carousel, and Dwight/God in the American
Premier of Jerry Springer the Opera.

G. Roberts Kolb

G. Roberts Kolb directed choral activities at Hamilton for 36 years. He conducts Tapestry, the All-Centuries Singers, and is past conductor of the Syracuse Vocal Ensemble and the Cayuga Vocal Ensemble.

Kolb is a contributing author to Up Front: Becoming the Complete Choral Conductor and Six Centuries of Choral Music. He formerly held the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Chair and the Marjorie and Robert W. McEwen Chair at Hamilton.

He earned a master’s degree at California State University at Fullerton and a doctorate of musical arts from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Lauralyn Kolb

Lauralyn Kolb holds degrees from Occidental College, where she sang with Howard Swan, and from Smith College where, as a student of Adrienne Auerswald, she was trained in the bel canto tradition as passed down from Marcella Sembrich through Queena Mario and Anna Hamlin. Post-degree study was with Ms. Auerswald and with the noted American soprano Helen Boatwright.

Kolb was a lecturer in voice at Hamilton College for thirty-eight years and maintains a private studio at home and in New York City. She also taught at Colgate University for nineteen years, has given master classes on both coasts, and has served as the New York State Governor for the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Her former students have been heard throughout the United States and Europe in operatic, musical theater, recital, and choral venues.

Kolb performed extensively throughout the United States in recital, oratorio, and opera.  She recorded Lieder by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel with pianist Arlene Shrut (Centaur Records), Songs by Clara Schumann, Poldowski, and Amy Beach with pianist Don McMahon (Albany Records), and Just-Spring—Art Songs of John Duke, with pianist Tina Toglia (New World Records, Recorded Anthology of American Music).
